Caitlin Clark cemented her name in history books yesterday when she broke the NCAA women’s basketball scoring record on Thursday, surpassing Kelsey Plum’s record of 3,527 career points.

The Iowa Hawkeye point guard spectacularly achieved the milestone by scoring a career-high 49 points in the 106-89 victory over Michigan Wolverines.

Clark is the first Division I player, men and women, to surpass 3,000 points and accumulate 1,000 assists and 800 rebounds, according to the NCAA. Averaging more than 32 points per game, she is within reach of Pete Maravich’s 3,667 career points—the men’s record set five decades ago.

She has five more games left in the regular season, plus the Big Ten Tournament and March Madness—after which Clark can choose to enter the WNBA draft in April.

The 22-year-old’s exceptional performance has also brought increased attention to women’s basketball.

Soaring ticket prices and increased viewership have made women’s basketball more profitable in recent years. In 2022-2023, Iowa women’s basketball generated over $3.8 million in total revenue.
