Dartmouth’s Big Green voted to unionize|@DartmouthMBB|X

Members of Dartmouth men’s basketball team, Big Green, made history yesterday when they voted to unionize 13-2 and formed the first-ever labor union for college athletes, challenging the long-standing notion that athletes are not employees.

The decision comes after the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) announced that student-athletes are employees, delivering a blow to the NCAA.

The association has long considered that college athletes were unpaid amateur students and not professional employees with job protections and compensation.

What happens now?
Dartmouth and the NCAA have raised objections, fearing negative consequences for college athletic departments.

The association believes student-athletes do not need to be paid beyond their scholarships.

The university has five days to object. But if none are filed, the union will be certified.
