Apple is developing its own AI-focused chip to run data center server software. The program is internally named “Project ACDC,” short for Apple Chips in Data Center, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The project has reportedly been in development for several years. It capitalizes on the tech giant’s expertise in chip design, evident in its iPhones, iPads, Apple Watch and Mac computers.

The chip will likely focus on running AI models rather than training them. It could enhance Apple’s competitiveness in the artificial intelligence space, where rivals like Microsoft and Meta have made significant strides.

One of Apple’s chip-making partners is TSMC, the world’s No.1 maker of advanced chips.

While details remain undisclosed, CEO Tim Cook has hinted at major AI announcements soon.
