The decision follows employee protests over Israel’s use of Microsoft software in the Gaza conflict
Microsoft announced Thursday that it has stopped providing certain services to a division of the Israeli Ministry of Defense, following an internal review triggered by a Guardian report.
The report claimed Israel’s Unit 8200 built a system to track Palestinians’ phone calls.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, confirmed the company found evidence supporting parts of the report, including the use of Azure storage in the Netherlands and AI services.
The decision follows employee protests over Israel’s use of Microsoft software in Gaza, which led to the firing of five staff members.
Microsoft disabled cloud storage and AI subscriptions for the agency, but emphasized it does not access customer data in such reviews. Unit 8200 reportedly plans to move operations to Amazon Web Services.
