Nvidia announced Monday it will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to help build massive AI data centers.
The agreement involves two linked transactions: Nvidia will invest in OpenAI for non-voting shares, and OpenAI will use the funds to buy Nvidia chips.
Together, they plan to deploy at least 10 gigawatts of Nvidia systems—enough to power over eight million US homes.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the partnership will drive AI breakthroughs and empower businesses at scale. Nvidia shares rose 4.4% after the news.
The deal could reduce OpenAI’s dependence on Microsoft, its largest investor and cloud partner. Microsoft allowed the ChatGPT maker to expand infrastructure with other partners earlier this year.
