Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has warned employees that artificial intelligence will lead to a reduction in the company’s corporate workforce in the coming years.
In a blog post, Jassy explained that as the company deploys more generative AI and digital agents, fewer people will be needed for current roles, while new types of jobs will emerge.
Although no immediate mass layoffs are expected, Amazon will gradually reduce its workforce, primarily through attrition. However, some teams—such as those working on Alexa—may still face direct layoffs.
Amazon is already using generative AI across nearly every part of its business. The company, which employs more than 1.5 million people globally, plans to spend $100 billion on AI infrastructure this year—up from $83 billion in 2024.
Since 2022, Amazon has already eliminated over 27,000 jobs.
