Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is not happy with the company’s AI progress and is reportedly spearheading the launch of a new artificial intelligence research lab that will focus on “superintelligence,” systems that surpass human brainpower.
As part of this effort, Meta has reportedly partnered with Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, a startup that provides training data for AI models. The initiative could draw investments of up to $10 billion from Meta.
Meta also plans to bring on board at least 50 top AI talents.
The initiative is part of a broader restructuring of Meta’s AI efforts, which have faced internal challenges, product missteps, and employees moving to other AI companies.
Despite releasing products like Llama and Meta AI, the company’s progress has lagged behind rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
Zuckerberg sees AI as central to Meta’s future, and the company has aggressively pursued talent, offering massive pay packages to attract researchers from competitors.
The superintelligence lab signals Meta’s ambition to reclaim a leading role in the AI race.
However, regulatory scrutiny and AI benchmark stumbles remain. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently took Meta to an anti-trust trial over its acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp.
