OpenAI unveiled GPT-5 on Thursday, calling it the most advanced chatbot update to date. CEO Sam Altman likened the ChatGPT version to “having a team of Ph.D. level experts in your pocket.”
He boasted major improvements in coding, writing, and complex task execution. The model can generate fully deployable software from simple prompts.
GPT-5 also integrates with Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts, making it a far more capable digital assistant.
Free users get limited GPT-5 queries while paid subscribers can make it their default. Pro users get unlimited use plus GPT-5 Pro. Enterprise and education customers gain access next week.
ChatGPT now has over 700 million users, way up from its November 2022 launch. The launch comes as OpenAI seeks a $500 billion valuation.
Altman acknowledged the new GPT version is not artificial general intelligence (AGI), but he says it feels like it is on the way.
It is also a major AI week for Anthropic and Google, which launched Claude Opus 4.1 and Genie 3, respectively.
