Users aged 13 to 17 will automatically be placed on ChatGPT for Teens

OpenAI announced yesterday it is rolling out ChatGPT for Teens as parents and teachers raise concerns about how students use AI chatbots.

The new version of its flagship chatbot designed for teens ages 13 to 17 aims to help users learn rather than provide answers.

For example, ChatGPT can help develop a thesis or explain a math problem step by step, but it will avoid writing an entire essay or giving instant solutions. It will also offer quizzes and reminders to discourage shortcuts.

OpenAI is adding stronger safety measures for users under 18. The chatbot will limit romantic interactions, discourage emotional dependence, and respond more carefully to discussions involving self-harm, eating disorders, and violence.

Teens will receive break reminders every 90 minutes and notifications that they are interacting with AI.

The moves come amid several lawsuits accusing OpenAI of putting children in danger through ChatGPT.
