Ferrari’s first electric vehicle, the Luce, fetched $40 million for a custom version over the weekend, setting a record for the highest-priced new car ever sold at auction.

Known as “Chassis 0,” the one-of-a-kind Luce was created by Ferrari’s Tailor Made division and design team.

The sale also set a new record for the highest price paid at auction for a new car.

The international auction house, Sotheby’s, did not identify the buyer, but said the custom Luce went for 36 times its initial $1.1 million estimate. Ferrari will donate the proceeds to its educational foundation.

The record sale comes less than three months after Ferrari unveiled the Luce, its first fully electric model. The standard car carries a price tag of about $640,000.

Expectations were high for the Luce, co-designed by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, but many Ferrari fans were unimpressed when it debuted in May, and shares fell after its unveiling. Other luxury sports-car makers, including Porsche and Lamborghini, have also scaled back some electric-vehicle plans because demand has been weaker than expected.

However, Ferrari’s latest results suggest strong demand for highly personalized cars. The company recently raised its 2026 financial outlook after beating second-quarter expectations.

Ferrari shares have gained nearly 12% this year, adding to signs that demand for its exclusive models remains strong.
