Ferrari launched its first fully electric vehicle, the Luce, marking a major shift for the iconic automaker known for roaring combustion engines and high-performance sports cars.

The five-seat EV debuted Sunday at Rome’s Vela di Calatrava stadium during a lavish launch event featuring Italian cuisine, Formula One footage, and dramatic lighting displays. Its name means light in Italian and is pronounced loo-chay.

Priced at about $640,000, the Luce becomes one of Ferrari’s most expensive regular-production models.

Designed by former Apple designer Jony Ive and Marc Newson, the car features a glass-heavy body, a spacious interior, and a mix of digital technology and traditional knobs, levers, and steering controls.

Despite its roomy design, the Luce accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds and exceeds 190 mph using four electric motors. Ferrari prioritized driving performance over battery range, offering roughly 330 miles per charge.

Ferrari bets on innovation
Chairman John Elkann said Ferrari sees electrification as an opportunity for innovation rather than a break from tradition. The company also introduced artificial sound technology to recreate the emotional engine roar Ferrari owners expect.

Ferrari continues investing heavily in EV production despite slowing demand for electric sports cars across the broader auto industry.
