America’s largest automaker, General Motors (GM), which went all-in on electric cars in recent years, is bringing back plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) models to its product lineup.

Yesterday, CEO Mary Barra hinted to investors about leveraging the PHEVs, noting that GM already sells them in China.

GM’s push for hybrids comes when EV adoption is slowing. Key GM dealers recently asked the automaker to deliver hybrids as consumers avoid buying fully electric vehicles due to higher prices, EV range anxiety, and worries over charging infrastructure.

The shift in strategy is seen as a major reversal for GM.

Dealers and auto executives view hybrids as giving customers the best of both gas-powered cars and EVs.

Hybrid sales in the US surged over 50% last year, with the world’s biggest carmaker, Toyota, and others like Ford, Hyundai and Honda being major players in the hybrid market.
