Toyota Motor retained its title of the world’s biggest carmaker, achieving a new global sales record of 11.2 million vehicles in 2023, surpassing the previous high of 10.7 million units in 2019.

The Japanese automaker reported a 7.2% increase in global sales, rebounding from pandemic challenges and chip shortages.

Despite facing challenges in the Chinese market, Toyota’s growth was driven by increased sales in Japan, North America and Europe.

The company also reported a record-breaking worldwide production of 11.5 million vehicles, marking an 8.6% increase from the previous year.

German automaker Volkswagen came in second, selling over 9.2 million vehicles worldwide last year—12% more than in 2022.
