Today’s new cars average about 28 miles per gallon, so automakers won’t need to push as aggressively toward electric vehicles
President Donald Trump rolled back the nation’s fuel-efficiency and tailpipe-emission rules, set by former president Joe Biden, marking a major shift in US auto policy.
His plan lowers the 2031 fuel-economy target from more than 50 miles per gallon to 34.5 miles per gallon.
Today’s new cars average about 28 miles per gallon, so automakers won’t need to push as aggressively toward electric vehicles. Trump also said he will cancel Environmental Protection Agency limits on greenhouse-gas pollution from vehicles.
Leaders from Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis joined him at the White House and praised the move, saying the lighter rules will help them build cars people can actually afford and want to drive. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the changes put customers first.
Environmental groups disagreed, warning that the rollback will increase gas consumption, raise costs for drivers, and worsen pollution. Experts added that constant rule changes make long-term planning difficult for automakers.
