Alphabet’s Waymo has temporarily suspended its robotaxi service on freeways and paused operations in Atlanta, Georgia, following a recent incident where an unoccupied vehicle stopped in floodwater.

The company is updating its software to improve performance around flooded roadways and construction zones. However, Waymo’s freeway trips are available in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami.

The Atlanta service was offered through a partnership with Uber. The software update follows a separate safety recall earlier this month involving about 3,800 robotaxis in the United States.

Waymo is one of Alphabet’s best-performing units and plans to expand into 12 more US cities. Its rivals include Tesla and Amazon’s Zoox.
