Some California lawmakers aim to regulate the Clear service in airports, which allows flyers to bypass security lines through biometric scans for $189 annually, citing concerns about social inequity.

California state Sen. Josh Newman introduced bill SB 1372 to address concerns over Clear. He says the service’s prioritization is unfair and elitist.

The proposal called for separate lanes for Clear, but was amended to allow current operations. It aims to halt new airport deals until separate queues with the TSA are arranged.

Its impact on airport revenue and staffing is under scrutiny, with potential challenges in obtaining dedicated TSA lines.

Clear opposes the bill, emphasizing hundreds of jobs created in the state. The company says it serves around 1 million California residents and contributed more than $13 million in revenue to state airports.
