Australian airline to charge passengers for overhead bin use

Australia’s largest budget airline, Jetstar, will begin charging passengers at least $18 each way to use overhead bin space, becoming the latest carrier to introduce fees for carry-on luggage storage.

Starting February 2027, it will scrap the existing 15-pound limit and allow small personal items that fit under the seat to remain free of charge.

The move makes Jetstar the first Australian airline to monetize overhead space. Similar models exist in the US and Europe.

The airline says the move is meant to tackle two common flying frustrations: weighing bags at check-in and fighting for overhead bin space.

It claims the move would help reduce boarding stress and improve on-time departures. 

However, Australians are not impressed with the decision. A one-way flight from Sydney to Osaka is quoted at $60, including carry-on luggage.

One person wrote online, “We pay for food and drink, the seat and checked baggage already... what’s next... $10 for the use of soap and toilet paper in the bathroom?” notes the BBC.
