Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are examining what went wrong when an Amazon cargo plane ran off the runway at Miami International Airport, killing five people and injuring several others.
What happened?
The Boeing 767 arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday afternoon. The aircraft ran off the runway, crossed a nearby roadway, and struck vehicles before catching fire.
Video footage appears to show the plane staying airborne well past the start of the runway before landing.
Aviation experts say the investigation would be on whether the pilots should have aborted the landing and attempted another approach.
They could also examine the aircraft’s speed, braking system, mechanical condition, weather, and wind conditions.
The FAA said the Miami airport lacked the arresting systems that safely stop planes moving beyond the runway. Instead, it keeps a 1,000-foot safety buffer on each runway.
Amazon said it is cooperating with the investigation.
