More airline passengers are upgrading from economy seats, creating a lucrative new revenue stream for carriers.

Delta Air Lines said its premium seat revenue matched its economy seat revenue during the first two quarters of 2026, highlighting the growing demand. United Airlines and American Airlines also reported strong growth in upgraded travel.

Travelers are increasingly opting for first class, business class, and premium economy for more comfort.

Industry experts say many travelers who upgraded during the pandemic now prefer the extra comfort, especially on long international flights.

Airlines have also made premium seats more affordable by offering discounted upgrades through their mobile apps, often just a few hundred dollars above economy fares.

The strong demand has encouraged airlines to expand premium cabins and introduce new seating options.

Even budget carriers like Frontier and JetBlue are adding first-class products, showing that premium travel is becoming a key part of the airline business.
