Traveling is becoming pricier, as JetBlue raises its checked baggage fees to as much as $70 ahead of the holiday travel season.

The airline attributes the increase to rising fuel and operating costs linked to the ongoing Iran war.

This marks the second baggage fee increase by JetBlue this year. The airline said its average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon this summer, up 57% from a year earlier. It expects the price to climb to $4.64 per gallon in the final quarter, an 85% annual increase.

Baggage rates
Most economy passengers traveling within the US, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean will now pay $50 for their first checked bag during off-peak periods, up from $39 previously and $35 at the beginning of the year.

First checked baggage will cost $55 during peak periods if paid at least 24 hours in advance. Passengers waiting until the final 24 hours will pay $60 off-peak and $70 during peak travel.

Second-checked bags will cost $70 during off-peak periods and $75 during peak periods. Passengers checking bags at the airport could pay as much as $85.

Despite higher fees and fares, JetBlue says passenger demand remains strong. However, eligible co-branded credit card holders and loyalty program members will continue to receive free checked bags.
