Newark Liberty International Airport experienced a radar outage at around 4 a.m. Friday for the second time in as many weeks.
Air traffic controllers lost all communications with aircraft, and radar screens went dark for about 90 seconds due to a telecommunications failure at a Philadelphia facility managing the region’s airspace, according to the FAA.
The outage delayed roughly a third of arriving flights and led to cancellations of about 10% of inbound and outbound carriers.
The incident occurred just one day after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a multibillion-dollar plan to modernize the nation’s aging air traffic control system, a proposal that will require congressional funding.
