The FDA proposed to make COVID-19 vaccinations like annual flu shot|Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff|CC BY 2.0

In an effort to simplify the immunization efforts, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday proposed to offer COVID-19 vaccinations each fall, much like flu shots.

The agency will assess each year in June which variant will likely be dominant in the coming winter, and annual shots will be administered to the public targeting that.

The FDA committee will vote on Thursday on whether to go ahead with the plan.

The proposal comes at a time when the population of Americans that have received boosters has come down. Only 16% of the population eligible for COVID booster took the jab—whereas over 80% of the public have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine.
