The US military has withdrawn all 12 of its B-1 bombers from the UK’s RAF Fairford air base following security developments near the location last week.
The strategic British air base was used for US operations against Iran. The B-1 bombers are now being returned to the United States.
The sudden withdrawal followed new intelligence about an Iran-backed threat, according to the officials.
On September 27, UK authorities arrested five people near Fairford on suspicion of explosives and acts of terrorism. In total, authorities took six individuals into custody and later released them on bail.
British officials have linked the suspected plot to Tehran, but Iran has denied any involvement.
Meanwhile, the US continues deploying forces in the Middle East, with the USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group carrying over 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines to the region by the month’s end.
