National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) released its report Monday, called the “nation’s report card,” which showed the devastating impact COVID-19 had on the country’s children.

Math showed the steepest decline ever recorded by NAEP in fourth and eighth graders between 2019 and 2022.

Math scores for eighth graders fell in nearly every state. A little above 26% of eighth graders were proficient, down from 34% in 2019. Fourth graders performed slightly better; just 36% were proficient in math, down from 41%.

Reading scores also came down in more than half the states.
