The Department of Education will hold on to the applications of borrowers eligible for the student loan relief program|Jeco|CC BY-NC-SA 2.0

The Department of Education removed the student debt relief application from its website Friday, a day after a federal judge in Texas struck it down declaring it illegal.

The application website, StudentAid.gov, reads, “Courts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program. As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders.”

The Education Department appealed the judge’s decision late Thursday, seeking to overturn the order. But it could take a while.

What about my loan forgiveness?
The Biden administration will hold on to the applications it has received hoping for a quick resolution. So far, the Education Department has approved 16 million applications for debt forgiveness out of the more than 26 million received.
