American high school seniors’ math and reading scores have dropped to their lowest levels on record, according to Education Department data released Tuesday.
Twelfth-graders’ average math scores hit their worst since 2005, while reading scores fell below any level recorded since 1992.
Only 22% of seniors were proficient in math and 35% in reading—both down two percentage points since 2019.
The National Assessment of Educational Progress, administered to tens of thousands of students in early 2024, revealed fewer students even reaching the basic performance level.
Researchers warn that the declines deepen learning gaps that started before the pandemic and are now more widespread.
Experts say students are graduating with fewer essential skills at a time when advancing technology demands stronger academic foundations.
