Sony-backed animation Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle has become the highest-grossing anime movie ever at $555 million worldwide, including $451 million internationally and $104 million domestically.

The film is the first of three planned installments in the Demon Slayer anime series. It dominated the box office, while new releases struggled; Universal’s sports thriller Him and Sony’s romantic drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey both flopped internationally, earning just $4.5 million and $400,000, respectively.

Analysts noted that Him’s American football theme limits appeal overseas, but expect it could recover the $27 million budget in the US.
