Disney+ began restricting sharing passwords in March, and CEO Bob Iger revealed in a CNBC interview that the streaming platform plans to start charging customers for giving away their passwords in June.

Iger, fresh off the proxy battle win, said password-sharing tiers will begin in select countries and markets before expanding to all subscribers in September. Specific pricing details are yet to be revealed.

ESPN+ and Hulu, Disney-owned streaming platforms, also started limiting sharing of account login information outside households in March.

Iger acknowledged Netflix’s achievement in password crackdown, influencing Disney to replicate it.

Netflix’s success in curbing password sharing resulted in a significant increase in signups. It added 100,000 new accounts in two days after password restriction in May last year, according to data from Antenna.

Such growth is the need of the hour for Disney+. The streaming platform is yet to churn out profits.
