Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire surpassed expectations, grossing $80 million in domestic ticket sales over the Easter weekend. It also made a franchise record, earning $10 million in Thursday night early screenings heading into Friday.
The MonsterVerse franchise also helped boost theater ticket sales this year, which were down 12% going into the weekend.
As schools and colleges are on Spring Break and Easter holidays, the movie’s strong turnout could continue this weekend and into next week. It is expected to gross $194 million worldwide for its debut.
The weekend also marked a strong run for Dune: Part Two, which has grossed $252 million in domestic ticket sales so far.
