This year’s Emmy Awards drew 4.3 million viewers, a 27% drop from the 2022 ceremony, which had 5.9 million watchers, marking the lowest TV ratings ever for the awards show, according to Nielsen data.

Why the slump?
Hindered by a four-month delay due to Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strike, the Emmys faced intense competition during air.

It was the same time the Monday night football playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drew 28 million viewers, and the Iowa caucuses had 4.7 million people tune in.

Despite its critical acclaim, the ceremony struggled against rival award shows and even a rerun of NCIS on CBS.

Several Emmy winners, such as Succession, The Bear and Beef, were honored at the recent Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, too.

In contrast, the Tony Awards, which has been seeing a significant decline in audience for decades, drew in 4.3 million viewers in June, an increase from its previous ceremony.

The Emmys must grapple with revitalizing their appeal. The next ceremony is scheduled for September, with ABC set to broadcast the event.
