Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer have brought in $20 million and over $9 million from their respective previews alone, reports Deadline|Twitter

Movie fanatics are getting ready for the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer today with back-to-back screenings. The nearly five-hour commitment is the result of the fascination with polar opposite themes of the two films.

Greta Gerwig’s pink paradise and Christopher Nolan’s story of the creator of the atomic bomb have brought in $20 million and over $9 million from their respective previews alone, reports Deadline.

Experts estimate that in the US, both films combined would bring in at least $100 million on their opening weekend.

Crossing borders for ‘father of the atomic bomb’
The craze for Oppenheimer reached a new level when reports came in of several avid film-goers ready to cross country borders to catch the movie in Imax 70mm format. Only 19 theaters in the U.S. and 30 worldwide—out of which six are in Canada—can show the film in the format it is shot.

Nolan and his team used Imax-specific cameras and custom-made Kodak film for certain parts of the movie to give the audience an immersive experience.

Back to Barbenheimer
Opposing themes have worked in Hollywood before, and Christopher Nolan is not new to it. There is a history of women-driven comedy films that hit theaters the same day as his films. In 2008, Mamma Mia! came out along with The Dark Knight, and in 2017, Girls Trip and Dunkirk released on the same day.
