Hollywood celebrated a strong Thanksgiving weekend as Disney’s Zootopia 2 dominated global theaters.

The animated sequel led the domestic box office with $156 million since Wednesday, including $96.8 million over the weekend, marking the second-biggest Thanksgiving debut in history.

Zootopia 2 soared even higher overseas, collecting $400 million, powered by a record $272 million opening in China, bringing its global haul to $556 million.

Disney executives say the film’s huge turnout reflects its strong reviews, 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore, and high demand for family movies.

Zootopia became a billion-dollar hit in 2016, and the sequel now looks ready to surpass expectations.

Universal’s Wicked: For Good also impressed audiences, earning $93 million in its second weekend and pushing its global total to $393.3 million.

Despite solid numbers, 2025’s Thanksgiving box office reached $293 million, solid but below last year’s record. Analysts say the holiday weekend sets the stage for a crucial December as studios look to push annual revenue past $9 billion.
