A new Lending Tree survey of 2,000 respondents reveals a notable rise in retail theft, with 30% of Americans admitting to shoplifting this year, up from 24% in 2024.

The increase comes as the country battles persistent inflation and rising gas prices.

Roughly 90% of those who admitted to stealing cited affordability concerns and broader economic pressures.

Food and nonalcoholic beverages emerged as the most frequently stolen items, followed closely by clothing and personal hygiene products.

Consumers also reported taking toys, electronics, and school supplies.

Major chain stores are the primary targets over independent shops due to heavy foot traffic, expansive layouts, and self-checkout lanes that offer greater anonymity.

Around 47% of respondents identified Walmart as the top target, followed by Family Dollar, Amazon Fresh, and Kroger.
