A recent Gallup poll shows that only 54% of US adults say they drink alcohol. It is the smallest share since the company began tracking Americans’ drinking habits in 1939.
The drop in alcohol consumption is recent. It was around 62% in 2023, 58% in 2024, and now further down.
The trend also spans all age groups, though younger adults continue to drink less than older ones.
Concern about alcohol’s health risks has grown sharply, and many now believe even moderate drinking can be harmful.
Experts link the fall to growing evidence that no alcohol is safe, WHO and US health warnings, economic factors, and shifting social habits, especially among youngsters.
It comes as non-alcoholic beer sales have seen double-digit growth each year, reaching over $440 million in 2024.
