Online gaming platform Roblox has expanded its age-verification mandate worldwide, requiring users to undergo an age check to use its in-game chat feature or maintain access to it.
Once verified, users are restricted to chatting with peers in their own age bracket or those in the groups immediately above or below them.
The system relies on facial-scan technology to estimate a user’s age. If the estimate is incorrect, users can appeal the result by submitting official identification or by updating their parental controls.
Roblox says it has completed a pilot phase in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where over 50% of daily active users have already complied.
The online game’s age verification move comes amid multiple legal challenges accusing it of failing to protect children from sexual predators and explicit content.
