Bookstores are proving they still have a place in the digital age, even as many Americans say they are reading fewer books.

According to the American Booksellers Association, the number of bookstores in the US has increased by about 70% since 2021, reaching 3,416 outlets in 2025. About 73% reported stronger sales growth last year.

Independent bookstores are also growing quickly.

Instead of disappearing, bookstores are attracting more visitors by offering a welcoming space where people can relax, discover new titles, and connect with their communities.

Barnes & Noble has played a major role in the revival by giving local store managers more freedom to choose books that match the interests of nearby readers. The company has also renovated stores and expanded its range of toys, games, and gifts, making shopping more enjoyable for families and casual visitors.

While social media, shorter attention spans and AI tools are changing how people consume information, bookstore owners believe readers still enjoy the experience of holding a book and exploring shelves in person.

Many younger customers now see bookstores as places to meet friends, enjoy a coffee, or spend quiet time away from screens.

The bookstore business may have looked uncertain a few years ago, but its surprising comeback shows that people still value real books and real-world connections.
