Wealthy homeowners are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on custom aquariums, turning fish tanks into luxury centerpieces that double as living works of art.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for large, high-end aquariums has surged as more people invest in home features that combine beauty, entertainment, and relaxation.
Aquarium designers say business has grown significantly in recent years. Custom installations can start at around $75,000 and climb to $1 million or more, with homeowners requesting increasingly elaborate designs.
According to the American Pet Products Association, 43% of saltwater fish owners surveyed in 2025 chose custom-made tanks, up from 24% in 2023. People having tanks larger than 126 gallons also increased to 34%, up from 17%.
Florida healthcare entrepreneur Eric Moskow spent $250,000 on a 2,200-gallon aquarium that houses rare species, including a golden moray eel and an epaulette shark. Maintaining the system costs about $3,000 a month and requires regular professional care.
Many owners view aquariums as more than decorations. Studies suggest that watching fish can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve mood. Some enthusiasts even describe the experience as a form of meditation.
However, luxury aquariums require significant time, expertise, and ongoing maintenance. Large systems need specialized filtration, temperature controls, backup power, and regular cleaning.
Industry experts warn that fish can live for more than a decade, making aquarium ownership a long-term commitment.
Despite the costs, many affluent homeowners believe the beauty and calming effect of custom aquariums make them a worthwhile investment, while some real-estate professionals say striking aquariums can even help luxury homes attract buyers.
