Reports also showed Jeffrey Epstein contacted Kathryn Ruemmler after his 2019 arrest
Goldman Sachs’s top lawyer, Kathryn Ruemmler, resigned Thursday after several news reports pointed to emails showing her close contact with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The emails were part of the documents the DOJ released recently.
The 54-year-old lawyer will leave at the end of June. She said intense media coverage had become a distraction and decided to step down to protect the bank’s reputation.
For years, Goldman has said Ruemmler’s relationship with Epstein was only professional.
Lawmakers released emails and records showing friendly exchanges, gifts, and legal discussions dating back to 2014, when she worked as a defense attorney. In one message, she even called him “Uncle Jeffrey”.
Reports also showed Epstein contacted her after his 2019 arrest. Ruemmler said she never represented him and had no knowledge of criminal conduct.
She joined Goldman in 2020 and advised CEO David Solomon on legal and regulatory risks.
Ruemmler previously served as White House counsel under former President Barack Obama.
