President Donald Trump says the 50% tariff would boost domestic steel production and revive American factories|Arosset|CC BY-SA 4.0
The 50% US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from all countries, except the UK, take effect today.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order doubling the 25% levy this week, stating it will help boost domestic steel production and revive American factories.
Currently, about 25% of the steel used in the US is imported. Analysts say the tariffs would mainly affect the closest trading partners—Canada, Mexico and Europe.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office said they are “engaged in intensive and live negotiations to have these and other tariffs removed.”
Mexico’s economy minister, Marcelo Ebrard, called the tariffs unsustainable and unfair, especially since his nation imports more steel from the US than vice versa.
The high steel levies are worrying automakers, plane manufacturers, home builders, oil drillers, and even can makers in the US, who rely on metals for their products.
