The White House said on Sunday that US and Ukrainian officials made progress in Geneva on updating a proposed plan to end the war with Russia.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is leading the American team, said the two sides worked through a new draft after a leaked version sparked outrage for appearing to mirror Moscow’s demands.

That earlier document would have forced Ukraine to give up land Russia hasn’t captured, reduce its military, and block NATO troops, crossing multiple Ukrainian red lines.

Rubio stressed that the controversial draft was only an early proposal, now reshaped with Ukrainian input. He called Sunday’s meeting the most positive so far, saying each day brings changes to the framework.

Although the US initially pushed for a Thanksgiving deadline, Rubio suggested negotiations could extend, saying the priority is getting the agreement right.

A joint statement from Washington and Kyiv said the updated plan must fully protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and provide long-term security guarantees.

Meanwhile, European leaders are preparing their own counterproposal.
