President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to increase economic pressure on Iran during their recent White House meeting, as Washington pushes for a tougher nuclear deal.

US officials said more than 80% of Iran’s oil exports go to China, making Beijing a critical lifeline for Tehran’s economy. They argued that cutting those sales could sharply reduce Iran’s revenue and force leaders to make concessions on their nuclear program.

Trump recently signed an order allowing the United States to impose tariffs of up to 25% on countries that continue doing business with Iran. Officials said this renewed “maximum pressure” against the Middle East nation while diplomatic talks continue.

US envoys are preparing to meet Iranian officials in Geneva for another round of negotiations. Washington has made clear it will only accept a strong, verifiable agreement that limits Iran’s nuclear activities.

Iran signaled openness to compromise by offering to dilute its highly enriched uranium in exchange for sanctions relief. However, it rejected demands for zero enrichment.

Washington has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the region and is tightening economic pressure.
