Japan’s ruling party, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, had a sweeping win in the snap parliamentary elections.
Speaking Sunday, she said the snap election was called to secure a popular verdict on her economic agenda. “We couldn’t move forward without the people’s trust,” she said in a TV interview.
The coalition led by Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) won 352 of the 465 seats in Japan’s House of Representatives.
She said the results show that the public wants Japan to boost manufacturing and increase defense spending. She also wants Japan to become the United States’ key ally in Asia.
