Russia hosted leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Kazan on Wednesday as President Vladimir Putin sought to strengthen trade, investment and strategic ties with the regional bloc.
The two-day summit marks 35 years of Russia-ASEAN relations and focuses on expanding cooperation. Putin said stronger economic partnerships would create new opportunities for businesses across both regions.
The Russian President held bilateral talks with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. He also met Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Despite differing geopolitical alignments among ASEAN members, several countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, have shown interest in Russian energy supplies amid elevated global fuel prices.
