A South Korean court ordered SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won to pay his ex-wife, Roh Soh-yeong, 944 billion won ($640 million), in a case dubbed the “divorce of the century” by local media.
Chey leads SK Group, whose chipmaking unit SK Hynix supplies Nvidia. His net worth is estimated at around $5 billion.
Roh is the daughter of former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo.
The settlement is lower than the 1.38 trillion won ($940 million) awarded by the high court last year. The move came after South Korea’s Supreme Court ruled that money allegedly provided by Roh’s late father could not legally be treated as a contribution to SK Group’s growth.
Chey and Roh married in 1988 and have three children. Their marriage broke down after Chey admitted to having a relationship with another woman and fathering a child. He filed for divorce in 2017.
The ruling can still be appealed, meaning the high-profile case may continue.
