Ukraine has witnessed rare wartime protests as thousands of people gathered in Kyiv to demand the removal of Army chief General Oleksandr Syrskyi.
Public criticism of the country’s top military leadership has been uncommon since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
The protests began after President Volodymyr Zelensky removed popular 35-year-old defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov (who had pushed for greater use of drones, robots and other military technology) for clashing with 60-year-old Syrskyi, Ukraine’s top army commander.
Some demonstrators in Kyiv said Saturday that Syrskyi was prioritizing politics over the war effort.
