A first-grader is in police custody for shooting his teacher in an altercation on Friday at the Richneck Elementary School, Newport News, Virginia. No students were injured.

Police Chief Steve Drew said the female teacher has life-threatening injuries from the gunshot wound but has shown improvement. “This was not an accidental shooting,” he said

Newport News Public Schools superintendent Dr George Parker said, “This is not a Newport News problem,” further adding, “It’s a bigger and broader problem than what we’re seeing today.”

The school has a metal detector but it is rarely used on children.
