Michigan health officials on Monday said that two people with serious underlying health conditions died after developing cyclosporiasis, confirming the first known deaths linked to the ongoing multistate cyclospora outbreak.
The health officials added that the deceased were also dehydrated.
The cyclospora outbreak has sickened more than 11,000 people across the US. Health experts believe the actual number is much higher because many cases go unreported. Investigators still have not identified the exact source of the outbreak.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that spreads through contaminated food, especially raw fruits and vegetables. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss.
Health officials advise washing fresh produce thoroughly under running water and scrubbing firm fruits and vegetables before eating to reduce the risk of infection.
