Bemotrizinol has been used for decades in European sunscreens
For the first time in over 20 years, the FDA has approved a new sunscreen ingredient: bemotrizinol, a non-mineral ultraviolet filter.
Medical experts note that the chemical is highly stable, meaning it breaks down less easily in the sun than existing UVA and UVB filters. It is not as easily absorbed into the bloodstream after skin application.
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stated bemotrizinol has been used in Europe for decades and is safe. He also mentioned that the move will increase market competition and boost consumer confidence.
The FDA classified the ingredient as safe to use for adults and children aged 6 months and older.
