Irkutsk Oblast Governor Igor Kobsev said tests found no microorganisms associated with the deceased’s research in her body
Russia has placed nearly 200 people under medical observation after a young woman working at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute of Siberia died last week from pneumonia of unknown origin.
The death has sparked concern over a possible plague outbreak.
Regional Governor Igor Kobzev said tests found no microorganisms associated with the deceased’s research in her body, while no other staff members have reported similar illnesses.
The case has drawn international attention. President Donald Trump expressed concern and offered Russia assistance.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is also aware of the case. It said 10 countries reported more than 3,800 suspected human plague cases between 2019 and 2025.
Currently, Russian authorities have not confirmed that the death was linked to plague.
