The study underscores the rising interest in ‘advance provision,’ enabling women to get abortion medication preemptively

New research reveals that thousands of American women stocked up on abortion pills, especially during periods of perceived difficulty in accessing medications.

The JAMA Internal Medicine study reveals that from September 2021 (post-leaks on the Roe v. Wade overturn) to April 2023, 48,400 requests for “advance provision” were made to Aid Access, an online telemedicine service.

Following the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling that overturned federal abortion rights, there’s been a notable surge in prescription requests for mifepristone and misoprostol commonly used in the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

The study underscores the rising interest in “advance provision,” enabling individuals to get abortion medications preemptively.
